Since
1986, fiber artist Sherri Roberts has been drawing
inspiration from the natural beauty of the
Middle
East’s varied landscapes
and cultures, reworking familiar secular and religious subjects in new ways.
She combines thread and fiber into complex, nontraditional designs, mixing
nature with flights of fancy to create items suitable for family and synagogue
celebrations.
In Israel,
Roberts--with a young child and having ceased working as northern Israel's
chief health educator--began her business. Since returning to
the United States and experimenting with techniques, Roberts now machine
couches
embroidery floss on silk, which serves as her canvas. She also uses appliqué,
hand stitching, polymer clay, paper beads, crocheting and knotting as
needed, producing both two-dimensional and three-dimensional fiber art.
